Sammy Nestico | Hal Leonard Sammy Nestico Sammy Nestico is one of the world's most gifted and versatile composers and arrangers. Sammy was a member of the United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C. for 15 years, serving as staff arranger and leader of the famed Airmen of Note. Later, he enlisted with the United States Marine Band and served as chief arranger and director of the White House orchestra during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. From 1970 until 1984, Sammy was the composer/arranger for the Count Basie Orchestra, directing the recording of ten albums of original music and garnering four Grammy awards. During this same period, he served as composer/arranger for Capital Records and created music for movies and television. Sammy has arranged and/or conducted albums for a wide range of recording artists, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Bing Crosby, Toni Tennille, Nancy Wilson, Barbra Streisand and many others. His arrangements have been performed and recorded by the leading symphonies, but he is most proud of his nearly 600 titles published in the educational field and played in the schools of America. Mike Springer | Hal Leonard Mike Springer Mike Springer maintains an active schedule as a teacher, composer/arranger, pianist and adjudicator in the Dallas, Texas area. His students have won top prizes in many competitions in the fields of performance and composition. Mr. Springer has composed and arranged extensively for piano, electronic media (MIDI), vocal ensemble, and wind ensemble. As a composer for educational piano music, he has had several pieces selected for the National Federation of Music Clubs list. Mr. Springer is an accomplished performer in classical and jazz idioms. He has produced and performed on three of his own CDs as well as those of other performing artists, and has performed with his wife Christy, a saxophonist, in the United States and Europe. He is currently the pianist at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound, Texas. John Biggs | Hal Leonard John Biggs Born in Los Angeles on October 18, 1932, John Biggs received his Masters degree in composition from the University of California at Los Angeles, doing further study at the University of Southern California and the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium. His teachers include Roy Harris, Lukas Foss, Ingolf Dahl, Flor Peeters, Halsey Stevens, and Leonard Stein. As an educator, he has taught at Los Angeles City College, UCLA, and UC Berkeley. He also served as composer-in-residence to six colleges in Kansas under a grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. As a performer, he founded the John Biggs Consort, which toured internationally under Columbia Artists Management, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and 20th century music. As a composer, he has won numerous awards and honors including a Rockefeller Grant, Fulbright Grant, Atwater-Kent Award, ASCAP “Serious Music Award” every year since 1974, and a number of “Meet the Composer” grants from diverse parts of the United States. Mike Steinel | Hal Leonard Mike Steinel Mike Steinel is a jazz trumpeter, pianist, composer and arranger. He is presently Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he teaches jazz improvisation, pedagogy of jazz improvisation and a jazz trumpet master class. Mike has served on the faculties of numerous jazz camps, including the Clark Terry Jazz Camp and the Jamey Aebersold Improvisation Workshop. He has performed with many notable jazz artists - including Clark Terry, Don Ellis, Bill Evans and Jerry Bergonzi - and he has recorded with the Chicago Jazz Quintet and the Frank Mantooth Big Band. He leads the UNT Faculty Jazz Quintet that performs throughout the United States and Scandinavia. Mike is the author of a book on jazz improvisation entitled Building a Jazz Vocabulary and has published many compositions for jazz ensemble. He is also the author of Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble, a comprehensive method for jazz style and improvisation for young players published by Hal Leonard Corporation. In 1993, he served as Co-Chair of the Jazz Advisory Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts. Mike holds degrees from Emporia State (BME) and North Texas State University (MME). Tim Waters | Hal Leonard Tim Waters Tim Waters is Music Department Vice Chairman, Director of Bands, and Associate Professor of Music at Oral Roberts University. A native of Greenville, South Carolina, he received his Bachelor of Music degree from Furman University, and his Master of Music Education and Doctor of Arts in Music Composition degrees from the University of Georgia. A member of the ORU faculty since 2003, Dr.Waters previously served as Music Director for Victory Christian Center, a large televised church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a position that also included the role of founding director of the School of Worship within the church’s Bible school. At ORU, he also serves as Instrumental Coordinator and Music Technology Coordinator; other duties include teaching classes in music and worship. Dr. Waters maintains an active writing schedule, creating new works for bands, orchestras and churches around the United States. He also enjoys producing recordings for various artists, with an emphasis on instrumental jazz and vocal worship.

Paul Murtha | Hal Leonard Paul Murtha Composer, arranger Paul Murtha (b. 1960) is a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania where he studied jazz arranging with John Morris and music theory with Richard Napolitan. In 1983, Paul earned a B.S. degree in Music Education (with a minor in Jazz Studies) from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. While at Duquesne, Paul studied jazz arranging with John Wilson and orchestration with Joseph Wilcox Jenkins. A versatile composer-arranger, Paul is at ease in both professional and educational circles, and is in constant demand in and around Washington, D.C. Paul has written music for acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, Patti LaBelle, Kathy Mattea, Lou Rawls and Kenny Loggins, as well as Ken Burn’s “Music of the Civil War." He has also written extensively for some of the top high school and college marching bands in the country. Paul’s work with the National Symphony Orchestra includes arrangements for artists such as Trace Adkins, Jordin Sparks, Gloria Estefan, Gladys Knight, and Huey Lewis and the News, for nationally televised events including “A Capitol Fourth” and the “National Memorial Day Concert.” In December 2016, Paul's "A Swingin' Nutcracker" (a 90-minute work for full orchestra) was premiered by the Baltimore Symphony. From 1990 to 1996, Paul served as the Chief Arranger at the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. He served on the arranging staff of The United States Army Band (“Pershing’s Own”) in Washington, D.C. from 1996 to 2001, then served as that band’s Chief Arranger from 2001 to 2016. Karen Buckwalter | Hal Leonard Karen Buckwalter Karen Lakey Buckwalter, a distinguished organist, pianist, and composer, is Associate Minister of Music at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, in Hanover, PA. She currently directs the handbell program, coordinates the Saturday contemporary worship and is privileged to play a 231 rank Austin organ (14,341 pipes), the 5th largest church organ in the world. Mrs. Buckwalter is a 1974 graduate of Westminster Choir College, where she earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree and a 1977 graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied organ with Mr. John Weaver and earned the prestigious Artists Diploma in Organ Performance. In 2007, Mrs. Buckwalter successfully completed the Associate in Ministry program at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and is continuing her studies in the Masters in Religion degree program. Internationally known in the field of handbell composition, Mrs. Buckwalter composed her first published work, “Danza” in 1982. With 47 handbell/choral compositions now in print, she has earned enthusiastic praise for her creative compositions, her colorful harmonies and her use of chromatics that have raised the musicality in handbell music as a genre. Mrs. Buckwalter is sought after as a handbell conductor/clinician for workshops and bell festivals throughout the US. George Stone | Hal Leonard George Stone George Stone has enjoyed a substantial career in music performance, composition, arranging and education for 30 years. He is the Director of Audio Technology and teaches Music Theory and Composition at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA. Born and raised in Newhall, CA, George was a product of the strong local music programs and teachers of the Santa Clarita Valley. He received his degrees from Cal State University Northridge where he was a member of the renowned Jazz A-Band for whom he wrote extensively. By age 21 he was directing his own Los Angeles big band and writing for live shows and television. Some artists and groups with whom he has been privileged to work include Doc Severinson, Dave Grusin, Tom Scott, Jack Jones, Chris Vadala, Jeff Babko, Bobby Shew, Donny McCaslin, Dave Tull, Luis Bonilla, Maynard Ferguson, Wayne Bergeron, Bob McChesney, Larry Koonse and Ron Jones. He has composed and arranged for NBC, HBO, Warner Brothers, Steve Wynn and Disney. He is also the composer of the most famous MIDI song of all time, “Trip Through the Grand Canyon” (Canyon.Mid) that was released on over 66 million copies of Microsoft Windows. George has appeared as guest composer/conductor at colleges and universities throughout the world. He has adjudicated literally hundreds of jazz festivals in the United States and is commissioned regularly by high school, college and professional bands to compose new music for jazz ensemble. He performs regularly on trumpet and piano, with compositions and arrangements released through publishers worldwide. Howard Helvey | Hal Leonard Howard Helvey Howard Helvey (b. 1968) resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he is active as a composer, arranger and pianist, and serves as organist and choirmaster of historic Calvary Episcopal Church. Nationally and internationally, he is in frequent demand as a composer, conductor, speaker, and member of the Steinbach/Helvey Piano Duo. Known particularly for his choral music, Mr. Helvey maintains an extremely active writing schedule, and his hundreds of compositions and arrangements are published by all the leading music publishers. His compositions have been featured on numerous recordings, national television and radio broadcasts, in such eminent concert venues as New York's Carnegie Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA), the Meyerson Symphony Center (Dallas), the White House, the National Cathedral (Washington, D.C.), and many locations throughout Europe and Asia. In addition, his music is regularly performed at regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and other professional music organizations, and has been acclaimed as ""engaging"" (Choral Journal), ""definitive"" (Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians), ""magical"" (The Hymn) and in response to his occasional inclusion of jazz elements ""fun and certain to be of interest"" (The Diapason). He received awards in 2002, 2003 and 2006 (as first prize winner) from the John Ness Beck Foundation, who annually recognizes outstanding achievement in choral composition. Since 1997 Mr. Helvey has collaborated as a pianist with distinguished artist Richard Steinbach in concerts and recordings of four-hand and two-piano literature. Performance highlights have included concerts in dozens of cities throughout the United States, Canada and England, and by invitation as duo artists at the 2000 national meeting of the Music Teachers National Association convention in Minneapolis. Widening their exposure through television appearances in the United States and Canada, the Steinbach/Helvey duo has offered its performances to a broad and diverse community. Along with violinist Mari Thomas and cellist Susan Petersen, Mr. Helvey is also a founding member of the Hannaford Piano Trio. A Missouri native, Mr. Helvey holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master of Music degree in composition and piano performance from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. Designated an undergraduate Chautauqua Scholar, he pursued additional studies in piano at New York's Chautauqua Institution. Mr. Helvey has studied piano with Raymond Herbert, Jan Houser, Richard Morris and Dolores Gadevsky; and his composition teachers have included John Cheetham, Thomas McKenney, Darrell Handel and Frederick Bianchi. About Us | Hal Leonard Hal Leonard Corporate History In the late 1930s in Winona, Minnesota, the late Harold "Hal" Edstrom, his brother Everett "Leonard" Edstrom and their friend Roger Busdicker had formed a very popular dance band. Concerned that their conservative father wouldn't approve of using the family name for a band, Harold and Ev took parts of their names and called the band Hal Leonard. As leader of the Hal Leonard Band, Ev eventually became known as "Hal Leonard." The company Hal Leonard was founded in 1947, after the Hal Leonard Band broke up. At the time, Ev started a music store using the Hal Leonard name while Roger and Harold were both directing award-winning high school bands in Winona. They realized that to successfully (and legally!) launch a new publishing company, they needed to license songs, so they ventured to New York's Tin Pan Alley in search of copyrights. What they got on their trip was an education in publishing and the rights to "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," one of the most popular songs of the day. Eventually, many music publishers in New York were licensing Hal Leonard to do school band arrangements of their songs. Thus began their publishing business and an entirely new industry. Hal Leonard continued to grow and expand into other areas, including instructional materials and repertoire for every instrument, voice, and ensemble. In 1970, Keith Mardak and associates started a new division of Hal Leonard called Learning Unlimited to create the first book/audio music instructional products. This division soon outgrew the company, and Mardak was named general manager for all of Hal Leonard. In 1985, an internal management team led by Mardak purchased Hal Leonard from its original founders. A new corporate headquarters was opened in Milwaukee, WI, in addition to expanding the Winona facilities to handle the company's dramatic growth. For this non-singing role, cast a strong actor with a sharp and imposing presence. Gender: Male Wiesel Aka "Weasel". A disgruntled paper-pusher who uses the Delancey brothers as his muscle, runs distribution for the World and has little patience or sympathy for the newsies. Feel free to incorporate this actor into the newsies ensemble when possible. Gender: Male Newsies The hard-working kids of New York City who go on strike for a livable wage. Find moments to showcase any talented tumblers or dancers within this group. Given the nature of this show, most other characters can double as newsies to help fill in the musical numbers. Bunsen Pulitzer's bookkeeper who helps Pulitzer come up with the idea to raise the newsies' price per paper. Hannah Pulitzer's secretary who is a clever advocate for the newsies. Gender: Female Snyder The crooked warden of The Refuge. A filthy and horrible juvenile reformatory, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep their government checks coming. Shirley Brendlinger | Hal Leonard Shirley Brendlinger Shirley Brendlinger is a performer, adjucator, published composer and recording artist. She is a nationally certified teacher of piano, theory and composition. She holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Kentucky, specializing in piano performance. For thirty-five years she has taught music, including being an adjunct professor at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. Her students have won numerous awards at regional and national levels. She has performed in England, Scotland, Germany and The Bahamas as well as in the United States. Matthew Edwards | Hal Leonard Matthew Edwards Dr. T. Matthew Edwards is a musician of many facets. As a pianist, he has been hailed by his critics for his 'considerable talent - honest musicianship and a formidable technique./ His performances have taken him throughout the United States, appearing as recitalist, guest artist, concerto soloist, and collaborative artist. His competition winnings include the Grand Prize in the Stravinsky Awards International Competition, and First Prize in the Music Teachers National Association National Collegiate Finals. Dr. Edwards has previously served as part-time faculty at several colleges, including the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, and Assistant Professor of Music at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Currently, he is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Missouri Western State University. As a lecturer, he has been featured at the National Conference of the Music Teachers National Association, the World Pedagogy Conference, and at the State Conventions of the Maryland and Texas MTA. As a composer, he has had major works premiered in Chicago, Salt Lake, and the Baltimore area, and is a contributing author for the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library. As a conductor and coach, Dr. Edwards has served as the rehearsal pianist/coach for the Annapolis Opera, and musical director for Opera AACC. Jennifer Linn | Hal Leonard Jennifer Linn Jennifer Linn is a multi-talented pianist, teacher, composer, arranger and clinician, and former Manager - Educational Piano for Hal Leonard. As a clinician, she has presented workshops, master classes, and Hal Leonard showcases throughout the United States, Canada, and India. Chuck Marohnic | Hal Leonard Chuck Marohnic Chuck Marohnic has enjoyed a multi-faceted career. Starting four decades ago as a jazz pianist, today he is a respected musician, educator, author, composer and arranger. For 13 years, Chuck had the privilege of serving as Music Director in numerous churches including United Methodist, Roman Catholic and United Churches of Christ. He also has been a frequent guest performer and clinician at many Lutheran, Presbyterian and other churches, including serving for over five years as Director of Music for the well known Studio worship service at Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ. He currently serves as Associate Director of Music for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community, Louisville, KY. Chuck has recorded 35 albums and CDs. Downbeat Magazine awarded his performances 4 stars. Early in his career, Chuck worked as a sideman with Ira Sullivan, Joe Henderson, Jamey Aebersold, Buddy Rich, Chet Baker and many others. For five years he acted as Coordinator of Jazz Studies and a guest artist at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska. In May of 1998, Having retired in 2003, Chuck was the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University since 1981. His former students include John Medeski of Medeski, Martin and Wood; Scott Henderson of Tribal Tech; Phil Strange, formerly with Joe Henderson; German pianist Klaus Ignatzek; Tim Ray, pianist for Lyle Lovett; and Joey Sellers, now a prominent educator/arranger living in S. California. Chuck has written four jazz publications. In addition, Chuck has written jazz piano arrangements of familiar church hymns and worship and praise songs, taking them from inside church walls to the entire community. What started as a sabbatical leave project from his position as Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University, turned into a book entitled Sanctuary Jazz, (July 1998, Shawnee Press). Joseph Martin, acclaimed pianist and keyboard editor for Shawnee Press says, ""Chuck is one of the best writers in the country today."" Joseph M. Martin | Hal Leonard Joseph M. Martin Joseph Martin (b. 1959 ), a native of North Carolina, earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Subsequently he earned a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Texas, Austin. Joseph taught for five years in the Piano Pedagogy Department of the University of Texas. His piano teachers include Jimmy Woodle, David Gibson, Amanda Vick Lethco, Martha Hilley and Danielle Martin. While at Furman University, he was accompanist for choral director and composer Milburn Price and, inspired by his teaching, Martin began to compose. He is a member of the staff of Shawnee Press as Director of Sacred Publications, with responsibilities for overseeing the editorial and creative direction of the company’s sacred publications and also coordinating the recording and production aspects of future sacred publishing efforts. Joseph has performed solo piano recitals and has been the featured artist with symphony orchestras in the United States and Mexico. As winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, he performed with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra. His solo recital in Ex-convento del Carmen was broadcast nationally throughout the country. Though he continues to perform in concert, he now devotes his efforts to playing in churches and for conferences of church musicians His first solo piano recording, American Tapestry, was nominated for a Dove Award. This album, along with his other recordings (Songs of the Journey, Celtic Tapestry, and A Christmas Tapestry) has been enormously popular in the sacred and secular markets. He has recorded for Yamaha's Disklavier series and has composed hundreds of commissioned works. Recognized throughout the United States for his many choral compositions, over 1200 compositions are currently in print and the list continues to grow. His composition ""Pieta"" was recently honored with an award from the John Ness Beck Foundation. In 2008 he was inducted as a National Patron of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. Along with Mark Hayes and David Angerman, Joseph has co-authored a fully graded, progressive piano method for the Christian student called Keys for the Kingdom. His major works include nearly 40 choral cantatas and extended works and Song of Wisdom, a choral tone poem based on the best-selling children's book, Old Turtle. His music can be heard in such diverse locations as Carnegie Hall in New York City; the Lawrence Welk Theatre in Branson, Missouri; and in hundreds of worship services in churches across the United States and Canada. Peggy Otwell | Hal Leonard Peggy Otwell Margaret (Peggy) Otwell is a musician with a distinguished and varied career as a solo pianist, collaborative musician, and teacher. She has pursued an active role in educating young pianists as an independent piano teacher for over 25 years. A member of MTNA since 1978, she is a past president for the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association, and has adjudicated for many piano competitions and events, including the Wolf Trap Young Artist Competition in Washington, DC and the national Piano Arts competition in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Otwell has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, The American University Preparatory Department, and George Mason University. As a pianist, Dr. Otwell is well known for her insightful interpretation of French piano repertoire. She has recorded the complete works of Déodat de Séverac for Musical Heritage Society Records. She has presented lecture-recitals, workshops, and master classes and has appeared in solo and chamber music performances throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Dr. Otwell was awarded a DMA degree in Performance from the University of Maryland, where she studied piano and pedagogy with Stewart Gordon, Thomas Schumacher, and Nelita True. Alexander Peskanov | Hal Leonard Alexander Peskanov Alexander Peskanov is a pianist and composer who has appeared internationally with the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Polish Chamber Orchestra, the National Symphony of Costa Rica, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. In the United States Mr. Peskanov has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and the symphonies of Baltimore, St. Louis, Houston, and Utah. Musical collaborators include Yo-Yo Ma, Maurice Andre, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Ilya Kaler. After graduating from the Stoliarsky School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine, he went on to receive his Masters degree from the Julliard School of Music in New York, studying with Ania Dorfmann. Mr. Peskanov is currently a Naxos recording artist and resides in New York with his family.

Rick Stitzel | Hal Leonard Rick Stitzel Rick Stitzel holds B.M.E. and M.M.E. degrees from the University of North Texas in Denton. His master's degree is in Jazz Studies. While at UNT, he studied with Leon Breeden, Dan Haerle, Rich Mattesen, Jack Peterson and Lew Gillis. He was a teaching assistant in the jazz area, directing the 3:00 lab band and teaching courses in jazz arranging and jazz fundamentals. Since graduation, he has been active in the fields of jazz education and professional music. He is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator, and has directed all-region and all-state bands. He is on the faculty at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas, where he is director of jazz studies and a brass teacher. Rick is active in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as a trumpet player and pianist. He is an artist/clinician for United Musical Instruments and plays the new Conn Vintage One Trumpet and Flugelhorn exclusively. Rick has enjoyed a busy career in the recording industry as a composer and arranger. He has composed music for hundreds of radio and television commercials, and has written for live and televised variety shows. His jazz compositions and arrangements are represented on the albums of Pete Petersen and the Collection Jazz Orchestra, The Jim Widner Big Band, and numerous college albums. Z. Randall Stroope | Hal Leonard Z. Randall Stroope Z. Randall Stroope is an American composer and conductor. He has conducted concerts in 25 countries, is the Artistic Director of two international summer festivals, and has directed music for Vatican masses on 10 different occasions. He has conducted in Hong Kong, Rome, Singapore, Barcelona, Dublin, and St. John (Canada). In the United States, Randall has conducted nearly 40 performances at Carnegie Hall, and numerous appearances at Chicago Orchestra Hall, and other venues. He has conducted 47 all-state choirs. Ensembles under his direction have performed at two national ACDA conventions, four regional ACDAs, and numerous state conventions. He has six albums on Spotify and over 70 YouTube recordings. A native of New Mexico, Randall attended the University of Colorado and Arizona State University, receiving a masters in vocal performance and doctorate in conducting, respectively. He taught high school for seven years in Denver, Colorado, and has been Professor of Music at three universities. Randall has received numerous awards including the Douglas R. McEwen Award for National Choral Excellence (Arizona State University). In composition, Randall’s teachers were Normand Lockwood and Cecil Effinger, both students of Nadia Boulanger, the famous French teacher (and student of Gabriel Fauré.) He has 190 published works, and sold over four million copies. Randall has written commissions for many entities, including West Point Military Academy, Raymond Brock commission (ACDA), Taiwan Chamber Choir, Carols for Choirs 5 (Oxford University Press), Music Teachers National Association, and numerous secondary schools, universities, state music education associations, and professional chorales. Deborah Ellis Suarez | Hal Leonard Deborah Ellis Suarez Deborah Ellis Suarez is currently on the faculty of the Community Music School at the North Carolina School of the Arts. She has taught piano for over 25 years and maintains her own private studio. She received her Masters of Music in music composition from Ball State University and received a 2005 Individual Artist Grant from the Winston-Salem Arts Council. Andrew Thomas | Hal Leonard Andrew Thomas Andrew William Thomas, (born: 1939 in upstate, NY). He studied with Karel Husa at Cornell University, with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, and earned his M.M. and D.M.A. Degrees in Composition at The Juilliard School. At Juilliard, he studied with Luciano Berio, Elliot Carter, and Otto Luening. He taught and was the chairman of the Composition Department at the Pre-College Division at Juilliard from 1969 to 1994. In 1994, The Juilliard School appointed him the Director of the Pre-College Division. In addition to composing, Dr. Thomas performs as a pianist, conductor, and is a guest teacher throughout the world. His many awards include a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts and a Distinguished Teacher Citation from The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. Many soloists, chamber organizations, and orchestras have recorded Dr. Thomas's music in the United States and abroad. Although he has taught throughout the world, since 2000, Andrew Thomas has become a regular guest of the People's Republic of China. Under the auspices of the Chinese Government, Dr. Thomas performed his composition for solo piano in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. He was the head western judge of a panel of pianists from all over the world judging the 2000 Chinese Works Piano Competition. In December 2001, Dr. Thomas went to Nanning, China to conduct, to perform as a pianist, and to teach master classes in composition. Dr. Thomas is now an Advisor of the Guangxi Arts College and a guest conductor of the Guangxi Arts College Youth Orchestra. He has returned yearly for further conducting and solo performances. He was honored as the main Western speaker at a conference of middle school administrators and government officials from all parts of China. In an effort to upgrade music education throughout China, Dr. Thomas developed a program which brought together music academies in an effort to advance all the students' technical and artistic abilities in Western as well as Asian music. He has begun a music library, now the largest in South China, in Nanning at the Guangxi Arts College. In April 2004 he conducted the Shanghai Conservatory Youth Orchestra and the Nanning Symphony in a three concerto evening with student soloists from Shanghai, Nanning and, Juilliard. Dr. Thomas lectured, taught, and performed in Korea at a music festival that he co- directed. This festival, The Seoul Music Festival + Academy brings together Western and Korean teachers to perform and to teach advanced string and piano students. On October 9, 2004 Dr. Andrew Thomas gave a piano recital in the Juilliard Theater at the Juilliard School celebrating his 65th birthday, 35 years teaching at the Juilliard School and ten years as its Pre-College director. After twelve years, he stepped down from his administrative position in 2006 to concentrate on his composition works, to teach his gifted students, and hopefully to foster the musical talents of young international ""Citizens of the World.""
